Creating a mobile app design for Digital and social media purposes picture.
In a Digital Design class the focus was to learn about the aspects of publishing different platforms of content. The topic that I chose was about Nintendo. I was asked to be creative and come up with a mobile design. I did my research and found that there are some things about Nintendo or others who have already published a lot of content. I had to be careful when doing something about this topic so that I won’t get others mad at me. This all was for educational purposes only. I wanted to come up with was something unique and simple as a way to evaluate my skills as a web designer. Therefore, I created a short but simple Nintendo encyclopedia for the characters of Nintendo
Why Build This App?
I knew a lot about social media and how great it is according to the usability to share things and or make a comment, or to follow others and spread messages around. I learned how to better communicate and find a way to share or spread the message by doing a podcast and then sharing it with others. Podcasts can be very insightful and full of knowledge. It can also be full of funny things or a way to spread awareness seriously for others to learn from. The same thing goes for a Facebook page as it too can be a great social media platform to share things, to connect, and to spread awareness for others. Now I wanted to take a different approach and keep the topic of Nintendo in its place. There are books and apps out there already made from Nintendo or others that has a lot of information about the games and the game consoles. However, when it comes to the characters there is not a whole lot, unless you’re looking it up on Wikipedia. This is the reason why I decided to do something on the Nintendo characters themselves.
What do you think of first when someone asks you what your favorite Nintendo character is? Why is there not any valuable book or encyclopedia for all of them? I am sure, that the books about the games and game consoles may talk about the characters but they really do not go in depth about each and every single one. Due to the limited time frame that I have, I came up with a short, and simple, and soft version of a encyclopedia about three different characters that Nintendo has. They are Mario, Link, and Star Fox, or Fox McCloud.
Internet saved pictures of Super Mario, Link from Zelda, and McCloud from Star Fox.
In a way it is like a dictionary that I made that is trying to give out as much information as possible about these three characters. Also it is suppose to be a mobile experience, therefore, It is build in a mobile based screen.
The Challenges
The challenges that I had to face was to make sure that the mobile app is set in a way for the edges to be clean and clear. The limited amount of space may not always be helpful, but it has the ability to scroll through the amount of information that you put into it. For this project you will design a mobile experience based off your topic or brand that you created. My options are to make something up as I go using what very little knowledge I have about these characters. All I know are the games that they may be in and what the stories are in short detail about it. But more on how they move and play on the screen. Or I can look them all up and use as much information that I can find. Which is what I ended up doing to create as much content for my project as possible. That way the project does not seem repetitive or redundant in any way for the topic that I chose to do.
The Design process
The process is very simple, and I wanted to start using the apples Sketch 3 program and did so thinking to learn and publish how I have been able to use it. Then I noticed that the instructions said to use Adobe XD. After I was finished with the way I wanted it to look on sketch, I was able to copy and transfer all of my content to the XD version. The look of it is much like a Wikipedia page but with other selected parts about the character. The content is of simple words and pictures put on the screen. It is all put into a Nintendo base like app, and I am calling it an encyclopedia because that is how it should be. A dictionary, Wikipedia, informational look and feel as you open up and use this app.
These are pictures of samples towards the way that each page will look inside the app.
Please note, that Sketch 3 and Adobe XD are not the same. But the programs act similarly. This program helps to build platforms and pages and prototypes which can come in handy when you want to create something useful. The content has a basic formality with what I wanted the user to read through. To learn the things that I have known and learned about each character. It is a copy and paste as for educational purposes only in order to show that I can come up and show my skills as a web designer. Learning how to quickly come up with content in order to show a basic and simple mobile design for this project. To make sure that I am not completely plagiarizing I put in the references that I took the information from. Much like an encyclopedia would do as to list the sited sources. I would rather give credit where it is due.
Therefore, Why?
I created this for the user to have a way more to gain more information and have access to it better than Wikipedia itself. If this was ever a possibility, then someone would have to do it. I understand that one day there will be a need for a book or an app that has a list of all the Nintendo characters and the information about them in great detail. There is already something about the Nintendo Games, and the Nintendo systems or devices. What better way to contribute to that to add an additional app of information solely on the Nintendo Characters and explain things about them in greater detail. Apps are built like a social media platform because it helps others gain access to information about a specific topic. It can have content that is insightful, useful, entertaining, or serious. Apps and other mobile based experiences can also be there to create connections with others, or to spread awareness and alertness about certain issues. Topics can be the easy part to choose, it the way that the person or user goes about it that can the hard part. The tedious task of making sure you have everything right in your content as you build upon it is the hardest part of it all. However, in the end there is a level of satisfaction as it gets published, and the intended audience can pick it up and use it and go from there. In the way that it was intended to be used.
Conclusion
I find that these projects are fun to do and very easy. The hard things are to just make it as simplified in the content as much as possible. I find that apps are fun and very useful, and I hope that this will be user friendly and useful someday as well. The point of this is for educational purposes only in seeing how certain topics can flow together in many platforms on the web or in your mobile phone. I have learned that apps and social media is a great tool to share your experiences and to share other insightful or mindful things. Now I would like to present to you my Mobile experience app. It is called “Nintendo Wars Encyclopedia.” It is still a work in progress as more characters will be added later. That is what I will do since there are plenty of Nintendo characters out there to cover. However, for now this is what I have to share with you today!
